61m wind turbine blade

The worlds longest wind turbine blade, which was manufactured by LM Glasfiber, one of Richmond Aerovac's most prestigious customers, will greet the worlds leaders at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen next week. The 61.5m long blade was developed as a prototype 5 years ago after years of research into materials, design and production processes. Produced for offshore projects off the coats of Germany, Scotland and Belgium, the blade was awarded the Product Prize 2007 by the Confederation of Danish Industries. It was manufactured at LM Glasfiber in Lunderskov, near Kolding in Denmark, and can save 180,000 tonnes of C02 emissions over it's 20 year life span.

Over the weekend of 14th and 15th November this year, the blade was transported from Lunderskov to Copenhagen itself in preparation for the COP15 conference, which will attract the attention of millions of people. The blade was installed at the Bella Centre as part of the Wind Power Works Campaign in collaboration with GWEC, the Global Wind Energy Council and Vindmølleindustrien, the Danish wind industry association. It also demonstrates how far the wind industry has come in recent years. 25 years ago the largest wind turbine blade was 15m in diameter and capable of producing 50 kW of electricity. Today the largest mass-produced wind turbine has a rotor diameter of 126 m, sweeps the near-equivalent of two football pitches and produces 5 MW - enough electricity to power 5,000 European households.

The COP15 conference takes place at the Bella Centre, Copenhagen, 7th to 18th December.
